Introduction:

Navigating motherhood brings its own set of challenges, often accompanied by unexpected emotional hurdles. In this deeply personal testimonial, a new mother shares her confronting yet ultimately triumphant journey through postnatal depression. From struggling with hyper-anxiety and insomnia to confronting inadequate support and misinformation, her story is one of resilience and discovery. With my guidance, she not only regained her sense of self but also learned powerful strategies for managing life’s conflicts and embracing authenticity. Read on to explore how our therapy provided her with the tools for a profound personal transformation and a renewed sense of empowerment as a mother.

Alisa’s Story:

Initial Struggles and Misunderstandings:

I came in for therapy because I was concerned about relapsing. I experienced 3 weeks of postnatal depression shortly after having my first baby. I could not understand or accept that I had postnatal depression. I was happy to be a mother and I only had loving feelings towards my son. I did not want to self-harm or harm him, and I was eager to bond with him, so I could not understand why I was given the diagnosis of postnatal depression. I was not aware, at the time, that it also encompasses hyper-anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, palpitations, and feelings of hopelessness. I thought that it was simply the lack of sleep and exhaustion from a difficult birth that had caused my severe symptoms. I had a terrible experience in the maternity ward because there was conflicting advice on feeding, which made me feel inadequate and helpless. I was also made to believe that I was to blame for my insomnia and that I was not trying hard to sleep enough during quieter moments on the ward.

Turning Point and Seeking Professional Help:

When I was discharged home, I was finally seen by the home treatment team who supplied me with sertraline and zopiclone. After about 3 weeks of medication, I finally felt myself again. The psychiatrist recommended that I should seek therapy to prevent me from relapsing. Although initially I was skeptical, I contacted my local children’s center about my needs, and I was put in contact with Sherine Lovegrove from Mum’sAid.

Discoveries and Learning in Therapy:
“Healing takes courage, and we all have courage, even if we have to dig a little to find it.” – Tori Amos

Even though I do not have a background of mental health conditions and I am not a victim of sexual or physical abuse, I was surprised to realise that I still benefit from talking therapy. With the help of Sherine, I realise that I was not managing the conflicts in my day-to-day life effectively. They had remained unresolved, accumulating to unsustainable levels and when I experienced a traumatic event (it was a difficult birth), I ended up in crisis. Sherine has shown me several techniques and models to help me with managing conflicting thoughts and emotions. The thought processes that stood out for me involved identifying my Saboteurs and not falling into the Drama triangle. I learnt that I have a lot of unresolved bitterness and resentment mainly due to the struggle of expressing my authentic self while being able to form/maintain meaningful relationships.

Progress and Ongoing Efforts:

I had either been people-pleasing at the expense of my own values or vice versa. With Sherine’s encouragement and support, I soon realized it is possible to maintain the relationship while being authentic to myself, they are not mutually exclusive. But it takes a lot of hard work and perseverance as I am having to re-learn how I can be empathetic to others, especially when they have significantly different values from me. I realized that I had not been empathizing in the right way, it is a much more active process than I had thought. I have now learnt (and am still learning) how to be in someone else’s shoes, to explore exactly what their fears and concerns are and what demons they could be fighting against. This helps me appreciate what drives someone to act in a way that is completely different from me, without abandoning my own self and opinions. It is still very much a work in progress, but I am learning a new way of relating and engaging with people.

Personal Reflections and Acknowledging Influence:
“Out of your vulnerabilities will come your strength.” – Sigmund Freud

I realized I had to face some uncomfortable home truths to make any significant progress with my recovery. It took me some time to come to this conclusion as I had to peel back many layers of miscommunications, setbacks, and incidents. And it is still ever-evolving. I was ashamed to acknowledge that I had been valuing my mum’s opinions to the detriment of how I was engaging with my in-laws. I had allowed her too much influence over me as I had been compassion fatigued with my mum and her insecurities. Throughout my life, it was just me and her. Due to her guidance, personal sacrifices, unwavering support, I feel that I would not be where I am if it wasn’t for her. It took me some time to admit this, I believe I always know at the back of my mind, but I did not want to own up to it. The hard part (and is still work in progress) is the ability to detach my mum’s fears, concerns, and insecurities from that of my own. Sometimes it is impossible as I believe we are also very closely aligned with our views and opinions. I need to remind myself not to let her fears and concerns affect how I connect with my in-laws. I do not want to dismiss what my mum is feeling, although from my perspective they are irrational, these fears and concerns are real to her. I will do my best to help reassure my mum but be proactive in ensuring I do not fall into the Drama Triangle. I remind myself that I can enjoy my-laws’ company without betraying my mum or fearing that she would value me less.

Endorsement of the Therapeutic Journey:

I highly recommend Sherine as she is patient, approachable, and makes me feel comfortable enough to disclose anything that is bothering me. Her kindness helps me discuss some uncomfortable, harsh, and disturbing thoughts in mind that I always thought was not I was able to talk honestly to her and disclose some unsettling and uncomfortable thoughts which I had learned to bury. Spoken to the wrong ears my thoughts and opinions would be hurtful and damaging but Sherine gave me a safe space to express myself freely. I do believe because I did not have this space before it resulted in my resentment which has a negative impact on my quality of life.

Tips to Navigate Anxiety Whilst Relying on Technology
1. Seek Professional Support Early

Don’t wait to see if symptoms will pass on their own. Early intervention is key to managing postnatal depression effectively. Contact healthcare providers who specialize in postnatal care, such as a therapist, psychiatrist, or a postnatal depression support group. These professionals can offer tailored advice, therapy, and sometimes medication if needed.

2. Establish a Support Network

Lean on friends, family, or local support groups for new mothers. Having a network to share experiences and receive practical help can alleviate feelings of isolation and overwhelm. It’s important to connect with others who understand what you’re going through and can offer emotional and logistical support. This is not something you can do by yourself.

3. Prioritize Rest and Sleep

Sleep deprivation can significantly worsen symptoms of depression. Though it’s often challenging with a newborn, prioritize sleep whenever possible. Arrange for help with nighttime feedings, whether it’s from a partner, family member, or a night nurse, and try to nap when the baby sleeps.

4. Practice Self-care

Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is crucial. Engage in activities that you find relaxing and rejuvenating, like gentle exercise, reading, or practicing mindfulness and relaxation techniques. Even short periods of self-care can make a significant difference in your overall mood and energy levels.

5. Practice Relaxation Techniques

Incorporate relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga into your routine to help manage anxiety.

6. Set Realistic Expectations

Adjust your expectations about motherhood and accept that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Motherhood is often idealized, but the reality can be very different and challenging. Understand that it’s normal to have a range of feelings, and having difficult days does not mean you are failing as a mother.

7. Trust Your Instincts

While technology can be helpful, trust your instincts and your body’s signals. If something feels off, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice.

8. Create a Tech-Free Zone

Designate certain areas in your home as tech-free zones to encourage relaxation and family bonding without the interference of screens.

9. Focus on the Present Moment

Mindfulness practices that focus on the present moment can help manage anxiety. Try to stay present and enjoy your pregnancy journey without getting too caught up in potential future worries.

Conclusion:

Postnatal depression is a complex condition that impacts many new mothers, but with the right strategies and support, it can be managed effectively. By seeking professional help early, building a strong support network, prioritizing rest, practicing self-care, and setting realistic expectations, mothers can navigate the challenges of postnatal depression more smoothly. These steps not only help alleviate symptoms but also pave the way towards recovery, enabling mothers to enjoy their new role while maintaining their mental health.

It’s important for mothers experiencing symptoms of postnatal depression to remember they are not alone and that help is available. Moving forward, consider these strategies as initial steps in your journey towards healing. Continuous engagement with therapy and community support can further enhance your ability to manage and overcome postnatal depression. Embrace this process of recovery, knowing that each step forward is a move towards a happier, healthier life for both you and your child.
