Fetal-Maternal Chimerism: Understanding Its Role and Holistic Approaches
Fetal-Maternal Chimerism: Understanding Its Role and Holistic Approaches

Did you know that, early in pregnancy, foetal cells migrate into the mother’s bloodstream? In fact, over the past 30 years this phenomenon has been used mainly for pregnancy genetic screening. However, a phenomenon once thought to only occur during pregnancy, has been found to be present decades later. Initially, because these cells were found in tissues from women suffering with autoimmune conditions, it was thought this was a maladaptive condition however, this is no longer the case. Evidence now suggests they play a key role in tissue repair. This article will discuss how the use of a non-medical holistic approach potentially can support pregnant woman in the optimisation of Maternal-Foetal Chimerism (FMc)

Pregnancy: A Balancing Act:

In organ transplant and blood transfusions the biggest risks to the patient is that there will be an immune response by the body to fight the invader. We have to use drugs to stop that happening, which is risky. So over come that we make sure blood and organ donations are as perfect a match as is possible. This mitigates the potential for a serious immune reaction.

Now, although your baby caries half your genetics its other half is still is “foreign” to your body. Your baby’s job is to get all the nourishment that it needs and it so, by growing “finger-like” projections into your womb. You can see that were those “finger-like” projections invade too far it could cause damage, thus, your body has special immune cells to prevent too prevent that. However, at the capillary beds, where the transportation takes place between you and your baby, because the blood vessels are so thin that cells can easily migrate across.

 Foetal-Maternal Chimerism (FMc):

Placental Cell Intermingling

Microchimerism is the term used for the presence of a low-level cell populations within the host. Foetal microchimerism, is defined as the low-levels of foetal cells residing in maternal blood and tissues during and after pregnancy. The main cause was once thought to be because of foetomaternal haemorrhage due to microtrauma, but this is not the case. In is suggested that, all women who have been pregnant, regardless of whether they have given birth or not, become chimeric to some degree. However, despite its seeming normality it seems that, early fetal loss appears to be the most significant factor initiating microchimerism.

Commonality of Foetal-Microchimerism

Initially, FMc was linked to the higher prevalence of autoimmune diseases in women. This hypothesis was grounded in experimental models showing foetal cells were found in affected tissue in conditions such as chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) as well as in a number of other autoimmune conditions. There was a higher prevalence of this occurring in  women of childbearing age. Studies have also shown male DNA in female bone marrow donors which further suggests FMc is a common occurrence.

The Gift that Keeps Giving

More recent studies have elicited that FMc is found through the body although it highest prevalence are where tissue damage is. This suggests that microchimeric foetal cells respond to maternal tissue injury, which would suggest they play a restorative role. When tissue is damaged, signals appear to mobilize foetal stem cells from their pregnancy reservoir, or the local environment may stimulate these cells to differentiate into specialized cells.

Studies have shown that foetal cells are recruited to sites of injury in various animal models. In humans, male foetal cells have been found in pathological lung tissue from women undergoing surgery for suspected lung cancer, indicating their potential involvement in tissue repair.

Are Foetal Stem Cells Responsible for Microchimerism?

The exact foetal cell type responsible for FMc remains unknown, but evidence suggests that stem cells are involved. Stem cells are the body’s raw materials — cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. Thus they are powerful restorative healers and builders however, stem cells require activation and the initial inflammatory response at the placental bed may be where the process to begin. However, when foetal cells migrate to host tissues, they are thought to differentiate into host “organ-like cells” to avoid destruction, and may even expand within host tissue. These observations align with the hypothesis that foetal stem cells are key players in FMc.

The Conscious Pregnancy Approach and Future Healing

The Conscious Pregnancy Approach works on a totally holistic approach. Our mission is to educate and implement those teaching to optimise the overall health and well-being a mother and her baby. We believe the body knows how to heal itself – it does that all the time without us thinking about it. Like a plant, your body needs good food, a healthy and safe environment and care. When you take steps to put all of these in place you have the perfect circumstances for your body your body to re-balance and reset itself. Thriving requires continuous restorative actions and therefore, it is our first responsibility to ourselves in this embodied lifetime.

Rationale for Facilitating Foetal Microchimericm

  • Foetal microchimeric cells are produced through damaged tissues or inflammation however, this also causes heightened activation of our immune system. Think of it as two antagonist coming together. You have the stem-like FMc cells wanting to repair and you have the antibodies wanting to kill them. This puts the body in a state of stress and stress, is a primary contender causing infertility, miscarriages and birth complications. Thus healing is dependent on a number of things
    • The amount of FMc cells available to repair and presence of killer antibodies
    • Previous exposure to maladaptative responses to unhealed trauma
    • Hostile environments both internally and externally.
  • FMc is more common that was expected and is shown to potentially repair and restore damaged tissue. When these cells cross over into the mother’s body that they mimic “maternal-like” stem cells and so behave like maternal cells. However, over a certain level the cellular concentration would most likely activate the mothers body immune system, potentially killing the foetus. Which would suggest that finding alternative strategies within a mothers capabilities could be beneficial in regulating safe-levels of FMc cells activations thereby, assisting future tissue repair, improved health and longevity.

Key Aspects of Conscious Pregnancy Approach for Foetal-Chimerism Management

  1. Personalized Nutrition Plans

Nourishment sits at the core of all healing and because most of us are living in heavy industrialised environments we don’t grow our own food source. This potentially sets us up for unhealthy eating patterns and lifestyles which often shown to cause disruption our capacity to assimilate, utilise and digest our food properly. Stress often results as the body can’t completely accommodate and toxic build-up happens. It is important that together we create a personalised nutrition plan that emphasises balanced meals and snacks. We focus on whole, nutrient-rich foods that help regulate blood sugar levels and provide essential nutrients for both you and your baby.

  1. Regular Exercise Regimen

Physical activity helps to regulate your blood sugar levels, by making your body more sensitive to insulin (the hormone that allows cells in your body to use blood sugar for energy). It also moves things around your body which clears away by-products of metabolism. Thus, having a exercise regimen tailored to your individual needs means that you not do immense good for your body but also, that you are more likely to continue, improving your overall fitness and it also reduces stress.

  1. Stress Management Techniques

Many pregnant moms are trying to do things perfectly and are wanting to do it all 24/7 which can be very stressful. Stress activates the immune system to protect you from invaders. Lowering stress therefore helps to regulate maternal-foetal intermingling of blood in the placenta which allows safe level of transportation and integration of foetal-chimeric cells. In the program we explore stress management techniques such as mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises and yoga. These help you to reset and re-balance your body, managing stress and maintaining emotional well-being throughout your pregnancy.

  1. Holistic Treatments

You will follow the Gentle Birth Method program. This involves having applying organ specific light touch massage to stimulate and reposition your organs. This is given in conjunction with other therapies that may also be applied such as reflexology, neuro-biofeedback, craniosacral, etc. When we remove the toxins, replace what is missing and install new messaging to your body, it will be able to reset and re-balance itself and ultimately regulate your blood sugar.

  1. Education and Support

Understanding a little how the body optimally works for you and what you can do to facilitate this is immensely empowering. As part of a community you will be able to access support groups and resources.

  1. Long-term Benefits

Regulated FMc has been shown to be beneficial in tissue repair. Aging is the result of breakdown of tissue. Thus, manage your stress i.e. Minimising trauma maladaptation to circumstances or hostile environments becomes your protective effect which sets the stage for a healthier future.

Conclusion
